“Annabel Lee” Edgar Allan Poe

“It was many and many a year ago,

In a kingdom by the sea,

That a maiden there lived whom you may know

by the name of ANNABEL LEE;

And this maiden she lived with no other thought

Than to love and be loved by me.

I was a child and she was a child,

In this kingdom by the sea:

But we loved with a love that was more than love–

I and my ANNABEL LEE–

With a love that the winged seraphs of Heaven

Coveted her and me.

And this was the reason that, long ago,

In this kingdom by the sea,

A wind blew out of a cloud, chilling

my beautiful ANNABEL LEE;

So that her high-born kinsman came

And bore her away from me,

To shut her up in a sepulchre

In this kingdom by the sea.

The angels, not half so happy in heaven,

Went envying her and me–

Yes!–that was the reason (as all men know,

In this kingdom by the sea)

That the wind came out of the cloud by night,

Chilling and killing my ANNABEL LEE.

But our love it was stronger by far than the love

Of those who were older than we–

Of many far wiser than we–

And neither the angels in heaven above

nore the demons under the sea,

Can ever dissever my soul from the soul

Of the beautiful ANNABEL LEE:

For the moon never beams, without bringing me dreams

Of the beautiful ANNABEL LEE;

And the stars never rise, but I feel the bright eyes

Of the beautiful ANNABEL LEE;

And so, all the night-tide, I lie down by the side

Of my darling–my darling–my life and my bride,

In her sepulchre there by the sea,

In her tomb by the sounding sea.”

  1. Very good blog! Do you have any helpful hints for aspiring writers? I’m hoping to start my own site soon but I’m a little lost on everything. Would you suggest starting with a free platform like WordPress or go for a paid option? There are so many options out there that I’m totally overwhelmed .. Any recommendations? Thank you!

      Well, thanks for the encouragement! Ha ha I can’t really give you any reliable advice, as I am only an aspiring writer myself! But personally, I have found that WordPress is just as nice as any of the other platforms out there, besides paying a professional to create a website for you. (Talk about your big bucks!) I love WordPress, and it is a very easy format to get used to using. Really, the best advice I can give is to read all you can, especially the classics. They’re classics for a reason, and there is tons to learn from them! Then listen. Don’t be afraid to get your work out there, and when you do, get as much feedback as you can! Try to find a good friend, maybe one that writes also, and get them to give you solid criticism. It’s not easy, but having someone to give you honest, down-to-earth input is invaluable!

    Hiya, I am really glad I’ve found this information. Nowadays bloggers publish just about gossips and web and this is really frustrating. A good site with interesting content, this is what I need. Thanks for keeping this web-site, I’ll be visiting it. Do you do newsletters? Can’t find it.
